Brilliant, Beautiful Energy Systems – The Aura, the Chakras and the Meridians
Our bodies are comprised of both the physical body and the energetic body. Our physical bodies include the respiratory system, the circulatory system, and the skeletal system to name just a few. And our energetic bodies have energy systems as well. Although there are several energy systems, here we will discuss only three – the Aura, the Chakras and the Meridians.
The aura is the body’s energy shield. It is the field of energy that emanates from the body and interacts with the atmosphere of the Earth. The aura is a filter, resisting the energies that are harmful and drawing in the energies that the body needs. The aura acts as a two-way antennae, bringing energy from the environment to your chakras, and sending energy from the chakras into the environment. Known to scientists as the “Biofield” the aura was first measured in the 1930’s at Yale University and was extensively studied by Dr. Valerie Hunt at UCLA for over a twenty year period, resulting in a book entitled Infinite Mind: Science of the Human Vibrations of Consciousness. Now, I am not suggesting that everyone should actually read that book, but the point is that the aura has been indisputably proven to exist.
Traditionally, the aura is said to have seven layers, or bands. Each of these bands corresponds to the seven chakras, and each band of the aura is connected to the body through the corresponding chakra. The first band of the aura is situated very close to the body. It is sometimes referred to as the “etheric” body; it is considered necessary for survival. The body cannot support life without its aura, any more than the Earth can support life without its atmosphere. For some, the aura is expansive and extends beyond the body several inches, open to the world. For others the aura is bound closer to the body, contracted and close to the body. When one is ill, the aura tends to be weak or closed in upon the body. The aura can also have rips or tears that will result in imbalance of the energy body.
The chakras are energy spheres or spirals that are located along the spine from the base of the spine to the top of the head. Each chakra influences the organs, muscles, ligaments, veins, and all other body parts within its energy field. Chakras also influence the endocrine system and so are strongly involved with our moods, personality, and overall health. Your physical and psychological evolution, as well as your spiritual journey, are all reflected in your chakras. A simple description of each of the chakras are as follows:
Root Chakra – the root chakra sits at the base of the spine, spinning over the pelvis and the vagina in a woman, and the penis and testes in a man. It exerts its influence both up the body, carrying the life force, and down the legs, providing support. This chakra is a channel for the primordial energies of the Earth; it is a receiver of the Earth’s powerful energies. The root chakra is concerned with survival – physical and emotional base needs. The color of the root chakra is red.
Sacral Chakra – the sacral or womb chakra is the center of creativity. It is the center of a person’s soul – the I AM of each individual. Within the second chakra babies grow, projects germinate, and the limitless creativity of the Universe pours into each of us. The second chakra extends from the top of the pelvic bone up to the naval, and encompasses the small and large intestines, the womb, the ovaries, and fallopian tubes. The color of the sacral chakra is orange.
Solar Plexus Chakra – the solar plexus chakra sits between the naval and the rib cage and governs more organs than the others. The liver, gallbladder, pancreas, kidneys, adrenals, spleen, stomach, and diaphragm are all governed by the solar plexus chakra. The solar plexus chakra is the power center of each person and holds the energy of discrimination and assertion. This is where the personal ego dwells. Yellow is the color of the solar plexus chakra.
Heart Chakra – the heart chakra is at the center of the chakra system, influencing not only the heart but also the pericardium, the thymus and the lungs. The pericardium is the sac that surrounds and protects the heart – the heart is the only organ that cannot protect itself. The heart chakra is the center of both joy and sorrow. In a healthy individual the heart chakra has balance; not underdeveloped nor overdeveloped. The color of the heart chakra is green.
Throat Chakra – the throat chakra encompasses the thyroid and is the center of expression. Energies from all of the other chakras flow through the throat chakra – the energies from the root, sacral, solar plexus and heart chakra flow upward through the throat chakra to the third eye and crown chakras, and the energies from the third eye (pituitary) and crown (pineal) flow downward toward the trunk of the body. These energies pass through the throat chakra, where they are metabolized – broken down and put back together in a form that becomes each person’s unique expression in the world. The throat chakra is the center of each individual’s Truth. The color is aqua or turquoise.
Third Eye Chakra – the third eye chakra is the center of thought and abstraction, as well as sensory perception. But most importantly, the third eye chakra tunes into energy that is more subtle than our ordinary senses can perceive. This is our center of intuition. The third eye chakra sits on the forehead between the eyes, just above the nose. The eyes, ears, hypothalamus, pituitary gland and brain are all governed by the third eye chakra. The color is indigo.
Crown Chakra – located at the top of the head, the crown chakra opens to the Universe. This is the gateway to the Divine. When the crown chakra is open information from the Universe can be “downloaded” to the individual, which can produce a feeling of peace and oneness with all everyone and everything in nature. There is a sense of larger meanings in the troubles of the world, and in our own journeys as well, promoting renewed hope and motivation. The color of the crown chakra is violet.
The meridians are the body’s energy pathways. There are 14 tangible energy pathways that carry energy into, through and out of the body. The meridians act as a separate energy system alongside the respiratory system, the lymphatic, the nervous system, etc. and are capable of reading, coding, and transmitting information from one part of the body to the other. The meridians “connect the dots” of the acupuncture points throughout the body.
Meridians affect every organ and every physiological system, including the immune, nervous, endocrine, circulatory, respiratory, digestive, skeletal, muscular, and lymphatic systems. Each of twelve of the meridians is actually a segment of a single energy pathway that runs throughout the body, surfacing twelve times and appearing as twelve segments. Each segment is named for the primary organ or system that it services. The final two meridians are called the Central and Governing meridians and are located along the front and back sides of the body. The meridians can get blocked, resulting in an imbalance in the body’s energy system which can lead to illness, or dis-ease.
Although the aura, the chakras and the meridians are only three of the energy systems that are part of the human body, these are the most commonly known, and are the focus of most energy work. These systems are operating at a high vibration, are non-solid, and cannot be easily seen by the naked eye, but they are just as critical to the body as any of the solid energy systems of the human body. A problem in one’s energy body can and will eventually manifest as a problem in the physical body. Taking care of one’s energy body is essential to good health.
Here’s to keeping those energy systems humming!
